The 3rd festival
The International Kalamata Music Days, held by the PHARIS – Kalamata Municipality Beneficiary Organisation and the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata, is back for the 3rd consecutive year and begins on the 1st July 2019. From this day on and until the 18th July, when the music festival of Kalamata will hand things over to the Kalamata International Dance Festival, a rich bouquet of concerts, masterclasses and musicological seminars will transform the Messenian capital into a musical and cultural attraction. At the same time, the offering of opportunities for artistic development and education, through an intensive work during the music masterclasses and inspiring process of performance practice, is lying in the heart of the festival. Finally, the exciting musical summer of Kalamata will come to an end in the last days of August with the awaited collaboration and the concerts of the Greco-Austrian string academy “Strings in Motion”, which continues to establish itself as a very important connection point between the Greek music scene and the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
The full concert program, which is centred around classical music and encompasses also improvisational jazz and cinematic collaborations, and the plan of the masterclasses and the musicological seminars can be found here.
The internationally renowned teaching faculty of the masterclasses includes the countertenor Aris Christofellis and the stage director Panagiotis Adam (both tutoring at the Vocal and Stage Performance Masterclass), the violinist Felix Froschhammer (Violin Masterclass), the cellist Indira Rahmatulla (Violoncello Masterclass) and the pianist Alexia Mouza (Piano Masterclass). The masterclasses are open to young musicians (vocals, violin, cello and piano) from all around the world, of all ages and in all stages of their musical development.
The masterclasses of the International Kalamata Music Days are going to be held from the 3rd until the 18th July 2019 in rooms of the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata and in the Philharmonic Amphitheatre, which is located very near to the conservatory. We would like to invite the public to join us, get inspired and experience the progress shown during the masterclasses!
The music festival International Kalamata Music Days launched in summer of 2017 as a continuation of the Violoncello Masterclass of cellist Indira Rahmatulla, which was held with the support of the PHARIS - Kalamata Municipality Beneficiary Organisation and the help of the Association of Parents and Guardians of the Students and Friends of the Municipal Art Schools of Kalamata - TERPSIS at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata in July 2016. Since then, the festival has successfully taken place twice.
Already since the first year of the International Kalamata Music Days, the violinist Felix Froschhammer and the pianist Alexia Mouza joined forces enthusiastically with Indira Rahmatulla, who is currently serving as the festival’s Artistic Director whilst at the same time continuing teaching at the annual Violoncello Masterclass. In the last two years young musicians from countries such as Azerbaijan, Greece, Germany, France, Hungary, Korea, Switzerland and Turkey travelled to Kalamata to participate at the masterclasses and to appear on stage during the festival.
The concert program of the last years includes international educational collaborations and exchange programs, for example with the Klezmagic Ensemble (Antre Foundation, Amsterdam), the wind orchestra Danubian Symphonic Winds (Austrian Embassy in Athens – Greco-Austrian Cultural Summer), and co-productions with the Kalamata International Dance Festival. Finally, renowned ensembles, which appeared on stage at the International Kalamata Music Days, include the ensemble for early music Ex Silentio of Dimitris Kountouras and the Arionas Gyftakis’ Jazz Quartet.
